Kazakhs are muslim by history and even after 70 years of soviet atheism they still incorporate islamic symbols in their everyday life. The traditional muslim star and crescent can be widely seen and the materials used in architecture are raw and rough with concrete, brick and stone being the most common. Russian settlers in Kazakhstan also had an effect on the architecture. Traditional Kazakh homes have carpets on the floor, kilims on the walls, blackened by soot from the wood stove. The connection to nature and the universe is also reflected in the interior design. Multi-coloured patterns, ornaments, rich textures, intricate wood-carvings, various types of embroidery, felt carpets, leather handiworks and metal items, thus creating a unique polyphony of colours and lines.
